Johannesburg -  A road construction worker was buried alive after a trench he was working in caved in near Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape on Friday, SABC news reported.

The 31-year-old worker was inspecting the trench when it collapsed.

It took more than six hours to dig his body out of the sand.

It was alleged that the construction company's safety officer did not inspect the trench before the worker went in.
