E Cape worries over deformed babies

2012-06-25 20:33

Johannesburg - The Eastern Cape health department has called for more research into why so many babies have been born with deformities in the province.

"We are counting fifty deformities within a period of two years," Eastern Cape spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said on Monday.

"We don't have a documented cause."

He said the most recent case was a baby girl born on Saturday at the Dr Malizo Mpehle District Hospital in Tsolo, near Mthatha.

"She was born with a small penis on the forehead and one eye on the forehead," Kupelo said.

"She was born with no nose and where there are supposed to be eyes there was nothing, just skin covered over the area."

Kupelo said the baby, born to a 16-year-old, was taken to the Nelson Mandela Academic hospital, but died on Sunday.

Earlier this month, a pair of conjoined twins were born also at the Dr Malizo Mpehle District Hospital in Tsolo.

Kupelo said at the time that they were the fifth set of conjoined twins born in the former Transkei in the past 18 months.

He said most of the babies being born with deformities were from the former Transkei.

Deformities, besides conjoined twins, included babies being born with their heart or brain exposed, having two penises or four legs.

Last year in November, a Port Elizabeth baby boy born with his heart outside his chest died after an emergency operation.

Kupelo said doctors in the area, were "in the dark" about the causes.

"This calls for a need for specialists to conduct a study in the area so as to determine what is the cause."

The department was "in talks" about the urgent need for research by paediatric specialists into the problem.

Kupelo said most of the babies with deformities died soon after birth, or during procedures to try and rectify the deformities.

"Where necessary we attempt procedures but unfortunately the majority die," he said.

that is very bad, and sad

      thato.loeto.3 - 2012-06-25 22:59

perhaps Mnr Basson might shed some light.... seeing that "most of the babies being born with deformities were from the former Transkei".... it being one of the ANC strong holds in the times.... also investigate the products sold in the Pakistani& Somali spaza shops- always shiver at the idea of most of these crucial food supplies being handled by foreign nationals... this is a serious security threat i say*

      Rodney - 2012-06-25 23:07

thato, better to keep your mouth shut and just look stupid than open it and confirm the fact. Simple fact is, you don't have to buy anything from those shops, go elsewhere if you feel that way. the only reason those shops are still trading is because they don't rip the people off, unlike the local businesses.

      thato.loeto.3 - 2012-06-26 07:28

and I noted that the owners of those shops do not eat from the same stock they sell.... which actualy agumented my worry. I might sound stupid but belive you me I don't just open my mouth- I have been looking into this for quite sometime. Most of their products look and taste different for the normal/ original stuff and some products you can not find the exact origin/ manufactuer. for instance my recent note is that their 1.25L Fanta Pinaple looks bright yellow with suspeded particles, they sell cheap biscuts& sweets which I could not locate the manufacture. I understand they are cheap & stuff and I think I know why- because they buy in bulk as a group but still, if you think of it, it is a security risk as they are not monitored by any regulatory authourity as they are not registered and should something happen the owners could just vanish into thin air without a trace (I don't remember seeing a health inspector at any of these shops) and in many instances they sell expierd stock... which they just brought in.... Oh, you nor your people don't buy from these shops so my comment might sound stupit to you Rodney... but I know for 1 that I am not stupid

      rory.audie - 2012-06-29 08:26

You raise a very good point Thato. Add to that the excessive hormones in cheap chicken, beef etc, poor crop practices, hormones in the water, these kids are bombarded by excesive hormones and chemicals that are so unnatural. No wonder then that we getting all these deformed babies....

  • matibeboy - 2012-06-25 20:57

    It's because of ANC....No offense!

      lana.crous - 2012-06-25 21:23

I know they're not the greatest government in the world, but how do you work that out?

      normboolalor.scizaar - 2012-06-25 22:40

Matatiele boy what do politics have to do with deformed babies? Unesyali yhaz, nxh!!!!

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-07-30 16:08

If they are responsible for poor governance, then yes. What about the genetically altered crops? Are there many in the Transkei? Pollution is almost certainly the problem, that's where the authorities should start looking. And also the dreadful state of the hospitals as shown by Carte Blanche last Sunday. Health Minister, do your job!!!

  • marius.koen.16 - 2012-06-25 20:59

mmm, born to a 16 year old? Maybe the baby will be normal if the mother is an adult and not a child herself. Seriously, is it something in the water?

      Kala - 2012-06-26 09:14

Swapie - Very possibly it has something to do with the water. It has been proven over the years that many pesticides used in the agriculture and even domestic household insecticides (Doom, Target) can have cause severe defects in babies. Mercury is another cause of birth defects and is often found in the fish caught close to our shores. When my wife was pregnant she was warned against eating fish because of mercury poisoning.

They will get nowhere with the investigation. I see a conspiracy theory in the making. The people are being kept poor and uneducated. They could be getting some of those special GM crops.... This is more than abnormal for so many babies being born with such abnormalities. Especially the conjoined twins and those with extra body parts.

      melania.nel - 2012-06-25 21:28

I guess the people who gives me thumbs down dont know what i am talking about. Dont any of you read anymore? Didnt history teach you anything? When the truth comes out, it may be too late.

      ingi.raikes - 2012-06-25 21:53

Ja, sorry, l did exactly what you said, l didn't read your comment properly! No, its not a conspiricy, that's not possible with the A.N.C. My dear they couldn't arrange books for school kids never mind mastermind a conspiricy BUT what you say about G.M. crops could be true. However, l think its more to do with malnorished mothers, mostly under age and drugs usage could too, play a part. Hormones in cattle, poultry and sheep feeds are as far as l am concerned the main offenders and seed, innoculated, weed killers, fertilisers and the horrific use of pesticides, willy nilly!

      melania.nel - 2012-06-25 22:17

Its not the ANC... Its bigger than them. In my oppinion.

  • marika.j.donohoe - 2012-06-25 21:15

It's because of the health of the mother, most of these mothers have a lack of nutrition, stress, don't take the necessary vitamins(which you should take during pregnancy)and because of poor living conditions. Unfortunately day or not educated to understand what is important for there unborn baby. It is a very sad situation because they don't have the money to go to a specialist who can advise them on how to take care of themselves and the baby. Most of these woman just go on and drink, smoke and eat what they want and wish for the best.

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-07-30 16:14

Don't agree, Marika. Lack of the proper nourishment can cause a lot of problems, retardation, hypotonia etc. But I don't think it can be blamed for malformation of the foetus - it's far more likely to be pollution of one sort or another.

maybe there is some truth in zuma's statement about ancestors being unhappy and cursing the voters. anc has 95% of support in EC, could be zuma misunderstood the message and the ancestors said "we will curse you if you DO vote anc"

      Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-25 21:48

What a of lot rubbish only God has the power to give and take life not your 'ancestors'. Poor heath and living conditions can be a cause

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-06-25 22:39

Jebo yes! Zuma is not the sharpest spear in the ANC

  • ken.rowe.509 - 2012-06-25 21:20

      Pixie86 - 2012-06-25 21:59

what a fail. What's infrastructure got to do with it?

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-06-25 22:33

Pix no infrastructure no education no CONDOMS

      nteroes - 2012-06-25 23:43

Ja they are both relavant, however nw thre are clinics in almost every area of th EC provinc....so tht t not much of a case t s one of the problem. Th fact s th abuse of alcohol, under age sexual intercorse, un approved medications to abort an infant, readines to be a mthr etc.

  • Shirley Van Heerden - 2012-06-25 21:59

Genetic problems (cousins having babies etc) , poor diet, poor vitamin status, poor ante natal care, general ill health, environmental contaminants as well as the use of certain traditional and western meds - all these cobtribute to birth defects. Babies should not have babies!! This is very sad. .

  • paul.chambers.1000469 - 2012-06-26 00:19

The doctors know what is wrong, it is incest that has happened in previous generations.

  • bongani.zungu.980 - 2012-06-29 13:42

I might be wrong but I think this has to do with the nutritional and water issues from eastern cape. Such has happened in America when a certain village was consuming water thathas some heavy metals from a mine. Water affairs together with the local municipalities need to look at this>

  • Funguysmushroom - 2012-07-11 15:03

GMO Crops may also have a hand in this. Transkei have been under Monsanto GMO maize crops for some time now. Maize is a staple food in Transkei.

  • patsy.smith.125 - 2012-07-30 16:02

Has anyone checked on the amount and type of pollution in that area? I'm NOT just a tree-hugger but an holistic healer.

  • sean.durkan - 2013-01-06 17:25

Benefits are paid out for deformed children at 5 x the normal rate. Mothers are drinking battery acid with water to cause the deformities and then claiming the increased benefits for the child.
