Johannesburg - Education has improved in South Africa since 1976, 79% of youths who took part in a survey say.

"With the origins of Youth Day in mind, learners in SA offer a relatively positive slant on the current state of education in SA," Pondering Panda spokesperson Shirley Eadie said.

Seventy-nine percent of the youth interviewed across the country in an annual Youth Day Survey felt education had improved. A total of 1 816 young people, between the ages of 13 and 24, were questioned.

"The biggest improvement was seen to be the ability of learners to choose between many different subjects, with 37% of respondents citing this as the facet of education that had improved most for them," the survey found.

Thirteen percent of those questioned saw more schools in their area and 12% cited better quality teachers as significant improvements.

The survey asked about the biggest problems at school and needed to be improved on.

Problems cited included alcohol, drugs, lack of adequate facilities, bullying, and lack of safety.

Eadie said government and communities needed to make sure young people could learn without having to fear for their safety.

"In our ongoing studies amongst SA youth, learners show a very real desire for education. Our task now is to learn from these conversations with learners to better provide an enhanced environment for education, enabling them to flourish," she said.
