Efforts to free trapped miners continue

2012-05-25 11:11

Johannesburg - Efforts to rescue two illegal miners trapped in a disused gold mine in Johannesburg were set to continue on Friday morning, emergency management services said.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said they were waiting for the minerals and energy department and the mine owners to assess the situation and make a recommendation.

"(When this has been done) mine rescue will start with the operation."

Rescuers knew where the two miners were within the shaft system.

The men, both Zimbabwean, were part of a group illegally mining for gold in a disused shaft at Durban Deep on the West Rand. They were caught in a rockfall shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Six illegal miners, all Zimbabweans, escaped and raised the alarm. Another five had since emerged from the mine.

Mulaudzi on Thursday said there could be more miners underground, but that efforts were focused on getting the two out of the mine.

Late on Thursday afternoon the rescue effort was suspended until Friday because of safety concerns.
Police would take over security of the site until rescue efforts resumed.

I thought that Zimbabweans who didn't get work permits, and are therefore here illegally now, were going to be sent back home.

@Alicia - I can understand how you feel. But the point remains that they were all given the opportunity to get work permits (as your friends do) and those who didn't take advantage of the opportunity should be sent home in my opinion. By the way, someone I know who did a similar thing to what you have done, was set up for a robbery by the people (Zimbabweans) she had been so kind to. Apparently the father, who worked as a street guard, told the gang that she had millions in a safe (not true) so if the robbery hadn't been foiled her family would probably have been tortured to death to try and get those non-existent millions.

These miners are so stupid. They should go and stand in front of the open mine and call on the government. Then demand that the government work out how much it will cost to rescue them and then demand that amount in cash before going home. They will make much more money that way.

They must through sand in the whole, not dig a whole to get them out...

"Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said they were waiting for the minerals and energy department and the mine owners to assess the situation and make a recommendation." The chaps that are trapped are f@cked, if they have to wait for these bunch of incompetent, inept morons to "asses the situation and make recommendations" before the rescue begins.

The Question is Why, the word is Illeagle, they are trespassing & involved in theft of gold, So why waste the mine`s & the rescue teams resources? Seal the Shaft. Leason Learned.
