Eight killed in Mpumalanga crashes

Johannesburg - Eight people were killed in two car accidents in Mpumalanga, the provincial department of community safety said on Sunday.

On Saturday, six people were killed and four were injured in an accident on the R23 between Balfour and Standerton, spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said in a statement.

It appeared that a Toyota Corolla overtook on a solid line and crashed head-on into a bakkie. Soon after that, a third car crashed into the wreckage.

In a separate accident, also on Saturday, two people were killed when a truck crashed into three dwellings along the N11 in Middelburg.

Two people were seriously injured, and nine had slight injuries.

Public Safety MEC Vusi Shongwe extended his condolences to the families of those killed.

“We will not allow a few people who fail to be patient on the roads take the lives of many people. Negligent drivers should be charged and convicted to send a message to other drivers,” he said.
