Ekurhuleni mum on police chief

Johannesburg - The Ekurhuleni Metro did not want to clarify Wednesday's reports that former metro police chief Hlula Msimang has taken over as the metropole's police chief.

"The mayor is going to make an announcement," said spokesperson Prince Hamnca.

A Talk Radio 702 report quoted the DA's Michele Clark on the matter.

Clark told Sapa she had been told by well-placed sources within the council.

Her concern was that the community safety portfolio committee had not met for three months due to the restructuring of the mayoral committee.

Robert McBride replacement

This meant there was no opportunity to discuss who would replace Robert McBride who was police chief until last September when he was dismissed, she said.

McBride is currently in the throes of a drunken driving court case and is also challenging his dismissal in the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

Msimang is the son of former health minister Manto-Tshabalala-Msimang and former ANC secretary general Mendi Msimang.
