Johannesburg - Municipal offices in Ekurhuleni will be closed for the festive season holidays, the metro announced on Tuesday.

"All administrative offices, libraries, selected rates halls and pay-points will be closed from 13:00 on 24 December, and will re-open on 2 January, 2014," the metro said in a statement.

"Essential services such as refuse collection, electricity and water services will, however, be operational."

The municipality called on residents and homeowners to refrain from giving gifts to on-duty municipal refuse collectors during the festive season.

"The metro disapproves of the presentation of liquor, or any other form of gift, to its employees while on duty as this practice has a negative effect on service delivery," said the metro.

It also advised communities to be on the lookout for informal recyclers and vagrants who posed as municipal workers and harassed residents, demanding presents and cash payments.
