Cape Town - An elderly Cape Town woman is in desperate need of assistance after the house that she shares with 14 children she takes care of was gutted by a fire.

Elizabeth Barrett, 68, saved all 14 children, some of them orphans and street children, but lost all her belongings, including her ID and Social Security Agency cards, the Cape Times reported on Thursday.

The fire began in the Harrington Street home when the elderly woman was making breakfast. Barrett says she smelled burning wires. She then found one of the bedrooms on fire.

She woke the children and escaped the house with them. But when she got outside Barrett discovered that one of the children was missing.

She ran back into the fiery house and found one of the boys under a bed next to the room where the fire was.

Barrett and the children survive on a social grant she gets for one of the children, her pension and her daughter’s salary.
