Elderly couple attacked on KZN farm

2012-06-11 22:00

Johannesburg - An elderly couple has been attacked on their farm near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Monday.

Captain Thulane Zwane said the 79-year-old farmer and his wife, 76, survived the assault by four men in their house.

Both were being treated in a local hospital.

Zwane said three firearms were stolen.

Agricultural union TAU SA said this was the 53rd farm attack in the country since the beginning of the year.

"It is high time for such crimes to be regarded as a priority," spokesperson Henk van de Graaf said.

  • jomardl - 2012-06-11 22:35

Why is it always the elderly who are targets? Who are these pathetic cowards. You can't one day without reading about a thing like this.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-06-12 01:34

They'll are targeted because they are weak, old and probably won't fight back. Their attackers are cowards.

      Jacqui - 2012-06-12 12:40

Bles, I don't know, I am 74 years old, did martial arts in my younger days, have a fighters mentality and am not going down easily. On the other hand when these bastards come, four at a time, who stands a chance?.

      Matthew - 2012-06-12 12:42

Omnivore. You want to know who? simple ANC wether they're secretly encouraging these attacks The fact remains, that they do absolutely nothing about it why, cause they're happy this happening, they want the white farmers out and if the whole land repossesion thing politics dosnt go their way, they go after what they want via violence.in this case killing the farmers off. Anyone who cant see that is blind or brainwashed

  • WitWolf - 2012-06-11 22:40

Once again the anc's way of doing nothing to prevent these horrendous crimes of happening...

      simon.pearce.790 - 2012-06-12 07:36

Maybe they hire illegal immigrants 'cos they are prepared to work!

      riaanleroux25 - 2012-06-12 07:55

busisiwe... the anc government are suppose to stop illegal aliens from entering the country...

      Jacqui - 2012-06-12 12:43

Riaan, the ANC can't wipe it's arse, let alone stop anything. Just as well negotiatons brought democracy to South Africa. Or at least tried to bring democracy. This bloody lot would still be hiding in the bushes if they had to liberate a tin of baked beans, let alone a country.

      mathilda.williams.1 - 2012-06-12 14:34

The world looks for meaningful debate on this and other similar articles, only to find the next day, that NEWS24 has deleted said comments. What is news24's agenda in all this?

  • dave.ducker.3 - 2012-06-12 07:35

Yep sick !! there are a number of out-of-luck ex SADF members who for board and lodging would welcome the opportunity to help out on the farms and if needed send these cowards packing. The Govment can't manage this we must manage it ourselves

      Koos - 2012-06-12 08:14

      Now there is an idea.

      Jacqui - 2012-06-12 12:49

Dave, wouldn't that be wonderful?. You will have them toy-toying again though. The white mans's brutality will make them jump and scream like never before. In their book you can't protect old white people or five month old white babies. In their book that makes you a racist.

  • Phil - 2012-06-12 08:01

Hundreds of Farmers being attacked each year and what are the Police doing? Firing one Police Commissioner after another for dishonesty!!!!. Lets find an honest man (if thats possible) and make am honest attempt to stop these attacks.

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-06-12 08:16

Its high time for such crimes to be treated as a priority??? Wtf. This should have been dealt with along time ago. How many more lives must be taken??

  • David - 2012-06-12 08:21

Has anyone not realized by now, that ANC, IFP, NFP, and/or SACP does NOT care about the farmers. Problem is that the FARMERS are the people GROWING the CROPS for FOOD.

      NrGx - 2012-06-12 09:39

@Mondli - fine, nationalise everything, take the farms etc but when you are begging at the street corners for food and money..remember... I DONT CARE

      Genet - 2012-06-12 10:02

Mondli, then do me a favour, stop filling your face with the food the farmers produce.

      Tax - 2012-06-12 10:19

mondi the only reason you dont care is because you are too backward to even understand how food is produced. You really should have just remained in the bush where you belong.

      Jacqui - 2012-06-12 12:51

David, problem is they want those farms. They won't be growing crops and everyone will starve.

      nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-15 11:35

That's why I LMAO when they talk about 'Land' - the politically correct word for 'viable well functioning White Farm'. It's not 'Land' they want - it's White Business that happens to be a farm, developed and cultivated over many years to finally become a viable farming business. Now these Bas^&*ds just want it to be handed over to them. Gimme gimme gimme. F%^ck &^f

      ludger.machele - 2012-07-05 04:45

amazing how all the crime is tied to a political parties headed by black people, yet crime before during apartheid was non-existant. Right ???? Because then, it wasn't robberies, but terrorist attacks. Right ??? You all are pathetic and gullable . . .

  • David - 2012-06-12 08:23

We all speak of working together. But that never happens because everyone is after power of the country. Yet, even some people that want to fight for the rights of everyone still stop and try to make things better for the people like the DA. And they don't over spend or make promises they cannot keep.

      ludger.machele - 2012-07-05 04:47

working together becomes an impossible dream when you read the comments posted on here

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-06-12 08:46

  • Sagin - 2012-06-12 10:56

Whats wrong with you news 24. there was a whole meaningful debate between @Dee and other forum users that was wholly deleted. why? whats your agenda?

      mathilda.williams.1 - 2012-06-12 14:32

Agreed. There was no abusive comments going back and forth, it was good, solid debating. News24 must have decided to silence it, but for whatever reason I cannot even fathom.

      nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-15 11:38

They do that here. One or more of the moderators is biased. As soon as something makes good sense and opposes their view/agenda hitting a nerve, it's deleted.

      ludger.machele - 2012-07-05 04:51

I think they(News24) just want anger and violent talk, look at the articles they put to print. Farm owner, robbers will always get people's blood boiling and hatred will be dispalyed outright . . .

  • Jacqui - 2012-06-12 12:36

Will the ANC now also hold a march or two against all the violence in this country?. Or are such marches reserved for a penis or two?.

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-06-12 13:40

Kill our food security in order to get your land and see who will look and who will eat. O I forgot! It is again only for a selected majority few. And the ones who are supporting this, your hands are full of blood. The wheel will turn.

  • anthonie.vanbosch - 2012-06-14 07:48

The irony here is that the attackers have attacked the parents of a lady who is working very hard in Ladysmith to raise money for mostly abandoned black children. These children are being placed in hostels and partly funded with fund raised from individuals and businesses in mostly the Ladysmith area. Ladysmith have such a hostel and is facing possible closure annually due to lack of funds. If you have some money, please think of these places where they have programs building a better future for these children and eventually security for us all and the end result may be adults leaving these places with morals and integrity and hopefully find a perfect job somewhere. More of these projects equal less crime at some point in the future.

  • nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-15 11:27

http://www.radiovop.com/index.php/national-news/9127-evicted-farmers-supplying-bulk-of-imported-maize.html Bulawayo, June 11, 2012- The bulk of imported maize being supplied to hungry Zimbabweans is coming from former white commercial farmers evicted during the 2000 chaotic land invasions and now farming in Zambia. Recipients of the government's grain loan scheme in Matabeleland were last week shocked to discover that the names on the stickers on the grain bags were of former white farmers. The Zimbabwe government has imported 300,000 tonnes of maize from Zambia to feed millions of its citizens who are facing starvation. Following the chaotic land seizures, most white commercial farmers, who were dispossessed of their farms fled to Zambia where they bought new farms. Since then Zimbabwe, which used to be southern Africa's bread basket, has been buying most of its maize grain staple from Zambia, to augment available stocks. “Last week I received two bags of maize grain under the grain loan scheme from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot in Insiza. One of the bags had a green sticker inside written, 'supplied by Michel Handris', a former Karoi commercial farmer. The sticker had also the contact details of Handris, who is now farming in the southern parts ofZambia,” said Edmore Ndlovu.

Mzuphela, your comment comes with extensive reasearch on the subject matter, right ?

  • Shaun - 2012-09-10 09:55

farmers should hold back all productivity and strain the economy until government makes a security plan for farmers and their families,i mean come on farmers, you guys have to do something drastic cause no1 else is gona do anything 4 your safety.in south africa if you dont get what you want then you strike,if it works for the majority it will work for the minority cause the government actually has something to lose if the minority strikes
