Elderly man burnt to death

2012-12-18 20:36
Johannesburg - A 70-year-old man was burnt to death, allegedly by his son in Mqanduli, near Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

"The man was found critically injured by his neighbours... and taken to Mthatha General Hospital where he later died," spokesperson Zamukulungisa Jozana said.

The man's son had a history of assaulting his father and police were searching for him. The attack took place at their house on Friday around 14:00.

In another incident, a 50-year-old woman was raped at Kwanxele, near Mthatha, on Friday at 20:00.

"It is alleged that the victim was [coming from a] circumcision ceremony when she met with the suspect who grabbed her and raped her."

A 32-year-old man was arrested and appeared before the Mqanduli Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

In Ngcwala a 30-year-old man died after being assaulted on Saturday after 22:00, Jozana said.

The man allegedly kicked in the door of a tavern and demanded liquor.

"After this man was given liquor by the owner of the house. He then pointed a firearm at him. It was at that time that [the owner] called the locals for a help who arrived immediately and assaulted the man with sticks and empty bottles."

He was taken to a nearby hospital but died on arrival.

Jozana said a case of murder was opened and two men, aged 21 and 23, were arrested. They appeared in the Mqanduli Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

In another case a 56-year-old man was stabbed to death at Elliotdale, also near Mthatha, on Sunday at 19:00.

The man was killed during an argument at his house. A case of murder had been opened and a 36-year-old man was arrested and would appear before the Elliotdale Magistrate's Court.
