Pretoria - An elderly couple are lucky to be alive after robbers shot at them in their home at a nudist colony north of Pretoria.

Magda and Niek Hugo, both 75, were shot in the arm and hand, reported Beeld.

The men broke into the house at about 03:50 and started firing shots at the couple at the Sun Eden Naturist Resort.

Magda Hugo was apparently woken up by her parrot making a noise and after getting up, saw a man with a gun. She slammed the door shut and yelled at her husband to wake up.

The men then shot open the door and fired 11 shots at her and her husband.

“The men didn’t come to get bread, they came to shoot and kill the old people,” said Marius Mok of the local neighbourhood watch.

Niek Hugo shot back with a pistol and the robbers fled.

The couple’s son-in-law said apart from being in shock, both Hugos were doing well.

Mok said it was the fourth time in three months that there had been a break-in at Sun Eden.
