Johannesburg - An elderly woman was killed and eight others, including four children, were injured when the bakkie they were travelling in rolled on the R501, about 20km from Potchefstroom, paramedics said.

The woman had succumbed to her multiple injuries, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

"Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for her. She was declared dead."

Other occupants were found scattered across the accident scene.

The children, aged between six and 14, sustained minor injuries. The other four occupants sustained minor to moderate injuries.

All eight were taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the accident was unclear. Bosaing said it appeared the driver had lost control of the vehicle.
