Johannesburg - An Empangeni man was sentenced to 40 years and six months in jail for two counts of rape and assault, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Thulani Zwane said Sibusiso Buthelezi was sentenced in the Empangeni Regional Court.

"He was sentenced to 20 years for each count of rape and six months for common assault. The sentences will run concurrently meaning that the accused will serve 20 years in prison," said Zwane.

Buthelezi raped an eight-year-old boy in April 2011.

He had asked the boy to show him where he could buy dagga in the area, and when the boy was walking him to the dealers, Buthelezi dragged him to a nearby bush, assaulted, and repeatedly raped him.

He gave the boy R5 and let him go, Zwane said.
