Enraged mob avenges man's death
Johannesburg - A group of unknown people have burnt several properties belonging to a man they accused of murder in Langeloop in Tonga, Mpumalanga police said on Sunday.
The damage totalled an estimated R3m.
The 25-year-old man was shot dead in the early hours of Saturday morning, Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.
"It is alleged some residents accused the tavern owner of murder and pounced on his properties to avenge the death," he said.
"They pelted his house with stones and burnt his two taverns and a few cars."
Hlathi said the tavern owner, believed to be in his early 50s, was detained for questioning in connection with the murder.
A docket of arson and another one of murder had been opened. No arrests were made.
