Johannesburg - The motorist who killed a baby and injured his mother and siblings when he had an epileptic fit in Soweto, is a metro police officer, it was reported on Tuesday.
Six-month-old Tshiamo Letsholo died while on the back of his mother Sylvia, who had been on her way to the SA Social Security Agency to re-enrol as a beneficiary.
Her son Oratile, 5, who is reportedly deaf and mute, her daughter, Mmathapelo, 17, and her niece Utlwanang were injured.
Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Senock Matoboko told The Star the officer allegedly crashed a Volkswagen Golf into a wall on the same road last year while having an epileptic fit.
Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said the officer had been on his way to work in his own car at the time of the accident in Meadowlands on Monday.
"At the moment we cannot confirm what made him lose control of the vehicle, but the story is that he had an epileptic episode," she told The Star.
"If he does have a condition, he did not disclose it to us. It would be dangerous to put someone on the road with epilepsy, especially because we don't know the severity of the condition."
