Johannesburg - Observant wardens at the Leeuwkop prison in Johannesburg foiled an escape attempt by Jaco Steyn, the infamous Sunday rapist, and Henry Okah, a Nigerian terrorist, according to a report.

Beeld reported on Monday that wardens at the prison found saw marks on the bars of a cell the two shared with five other prisoners on 10 January.

The five were serving six life sentences and an additional 262 years' imprisonment.

Correctional Services spokesperson Zodwa Mtsweni said Steyn has since been moved to the Pretoria prison.

Sapa reported that Steyn was found guilty of 33 charges, including murder, in the South Gauteng High Court in September 2012. He was sentenced to five life terms in prison.

Okah was jailed for 24 years by the South Gauteng High Court in March 2013. He was found guilty of 13 counts of terrorism relating to two car bombs which exploded in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2010, killing 12 people, according to Sapa.
