Durban - Police are stumped after a suspected house robber escaped and another prisoner managed to hang himself in his cell at the Westville police station at the weekend.

Two independent sources within the Westville police station revealed that a man, who had been detained for house breaking, was able to give officers, who were meant to be guarding him, the slip.

"The suspect was in a holding cell at the station and he managed to break a hole in the ceiling and then climb into the roof. He moved around inside there and without getting caught he removed some roof tiles and climbed onto the roof, before inching his way down a wall," one source said.

"He climbed over the fence and ran away. It is going to be difficult to get this guy again."

It is understood that the man had been arrested while walking out of a house he had broken into in Westville.

"How he was able to break through the ceiling and move around in the roof without alerting the officers who were meant to be guarding him, I don't know," the source said.

In another incident on Saturday, a 19-year-old man detained for shoplifting hanged himself with his belt in the holding cells. The man was found by officers and cut down, but was declared dead by paramedics who had been called to the scene.

"It is common practise that the belts and shoelaces of suspects are removed to prevent them from harming themselves, but this wasn't done," the source said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that dockets of escaping from lawful custody and an inquest had been opened for each case respectively.
