2012-04-30 17:19

Johannesburg - Two men were re-arrested on Monday after escaping from the Jane Furse police station holding cells with 12 other awaiting-trial prisoners, Limpopo police said.

"The two escapees were re-arrested in Jane Furse today after an intensive search by the police," Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

The 14 escaped on Sunday morning after overpowering a police officer who was serving them tea.

They were awaiting trial for attempted murder, robbery, rape, vehicle theft, possession of suspected stolen property, and housebreaking.

"An intensive search was immediately launched and five were re-arrested in Jane Furse [on Sunday]."

The other seven were still on the run.

All seven arrested would appear in the Nebo Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of escaping from lawful custody.

"The 14 escaped on Sunday morning after overpowering a police officer who was serving them tea." WHY ARE PRISONERS EVEN GIVEN TEA?? PRISON IS NOT A HOLIDAY!!

      Thato - 2012-04-30 18:07

to keep them alive and well for their court appearances otherwise they would collapse of starvation before the magistrate...Democracy is for all of us even the alleged wrong doers...

monies maak my vol gat asb .prisoners are also human being .

      Rob - 2012-05-01 10:09

So, if you live near this prison. Who should you be on the lookout for ? Why is there no description OR race provided, so people in the area can be vigilent. Are we supposed to take it for granted that these prisoners are one particular race ? Ridiculous !

wonder of wonders!!! Law abiding citizens cant even get clean drinking water in our beloved country, a basic human right!!! What are the police doing serving hot tea to violent criminals. Whats next, hot chocolate? and at whos expense?

      Raymond - 2012-04-30 18:22

Just a thought! Couldn't some prefer to be caught by police so that they can get a three course meal constantly?

  • goyougoodthing - 2012-04-30 18:23

14 escaped, 2 were captured but another 5 were also captured, so 7 of 14 are on the run. The story is poorly written. No tea for criminals!

They ran away when they found out there would be no cake

      Anne-marie Blackbeard - 2012-04-30 18:48

TEA ??!! I know the SAPS is supposed to protect and serve, but to serve TEA??!! The most imperialist of all beverages !. This is why Mugabe hates the British so much. They planted tea all over his beautiful countryside. Looks like our inmates had a Bustin' Tea Party. Madatters.

      CookieMonsterZA - 2012-04-30 18:40

What the f*** does british imperialism have to do with the whole story? Your comment is highly irrelevant. My question however is why was there only one officer when they got served their tea? That's just begging for trouble

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-01 19:37

Maybe you are right, CookieMonster. There should have been at least three more officers. One to pour the tea, the other for the sugar and the third to pour the milk. The fourth (yourself perhaps) should have offered the cookies. And just a reminder: In this country we don't beg. We demand.

  • Lacrimose - 2012-04-30 18:55

Bemused at the outrage about a mug of tea. Um how about the fact that people keep escaping - tea or no tea? I think both SAPS and Dept of Corrections have had enough escapes in the last 2 years to have fixed the holes in their system.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-01 12:13

They can't fix the holes while they leave the doors open.

  • Prosper - 2012-04-30 19:58

    Hahaha Tea Break.

      Lacrimose - 2012-04-30 20:14

They all went off to Eet-Sumor :)

  • Hannah Puissa Mostert - 2012-04-30 21:31

Why try to escape we give you free food and tea and the President lets you off anyway .. What's the big hurry?

  • Carlo - 2012-04-30 21:47

Could they not wait till the 14th of may, guess they had other plans

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-01 12:10

Oh heavens, he was serving them tea. Ungrateful lot.
