Johannesburg - Ten men have each been jailed for 15 years by the Mmabatho Regional Court for assaulting a police officer in police cells in Mmabatho, North West police said on Wednesday.

They were sentenced on Tuesday for attacking Captain Abram Manaka in 2005, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Ngubane said Manaka was responding to a call in the cells when they grabbed him. They kicked, pepper-sprayed and stabbed him with a sharp object.

They tied him up, took his cellphone and cell keys, he said

"Blankets were piled up on his head to suffocate him and he was ultimately rescued by the remaining inmates who were not involved in the assault."

Ngubane said the prisoners escaped but they were later re-arrested.

They were facing charges of robbery, house breaking, assault and rape.

Their 15-year sentencing would run concurrently with the terms they were serving, said Ngubane.
