Cape Town - Eskom has once again come under fire. This time for planning to spend R500m on revamping the decor at its head office in Megawatt Park, Johannesburg.

According to the Sunday Times, tender documents show that proposed upgrades include R3m for a VIP entrance and offices; R608 000 for curtaining; air conditioning, heating and ventilation of R81m; uninterrupted power supply systems for R6.7m; plus timber deck walkways, landscaping, the revamping of cafes, bicycle parking racks and toilet cubicles with custom-designed graphic wallpaper among others.

This move comes after Eskom imposed emergency load-shedding last month, while seeking a bailout of up to R50bn from the South African taxpayer. At the same time, it emerged that Eskom spent R10bn on diesel in order to feed more power to the grid via generators so as to keep the lights on.
