Mthatha - Investigators have collected "most of the evidence" in a grave tampering case involving Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela, and will give the docket to a senior prosecutor, Mthatha police said on Friday.

"Investigators have gathered most of the evidence," police spokesman Mzukisi Fatyela said.

"They will hand over the docket to the senior prosecutor on Tuesday next week."

Mandela family members opened the case against Mandla on Tuesday after he admitted to exhuming the remains of his father, Makgatho Mandela, and two other family members two years ago.

The remains of the three were exhumed from Mandla's home in the village of Mvezo on Wednesday after the granting of a court order to 16 members of the Mandela family by the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha.

The remains were reburied at Nelson Mandela's home in Qunu on Thursday.

Mandela is in a critical condition in a hospital in Pretoria.
