Ex-Matie gets 30 years' for student's murder

2012-03-05 15:35

Cape Town - A former University of Stellenbosch student was sentenced by the Western Cape High Court on Monday to 30 years in prison for kidnapping, raping and killing a fellow student.

Jacobus Johannes Eksteen, 27, was convicted of killing Erin van Rensburg in 2009. Her body was found in a shallow grave in Elandsbaai on the Cape west coast.

Eksteen was arrested a day after Van Rensburg went missing.

At the time of his arrest, he was a final year Computer Science student, and had become friendly with Van Rensburg's brother, Byron.

The brother and sister shared an apartment and Eksteen had been working on Byron's computer when she disappeared.

Eksteen appeared before Judge President John Hlope on Monday.

The proceedings took the form of a plea-bargain, in which all three charges were taken as one for the purposes of sentence.

you all seem to be missing the point a young lady was kidnapped raped and kill. its a thing that should never happen to any person and punishment should be given to match the crime.

      Sizwe - 2012-03-05 19:27

Except when the victim is a harmless old man who just happens to be homeless and the killers are from Waterkloof? Where was the fitting punishment there??

      Peter - 2012-03-06 16:41

@Sizwe he kids who killed the old man should get the maximum as well. They are cowardly bastards who committed a shocking crime. Throw away the keys. A criminal is a criminal, finish and klaar. Well done Judge Hlope.

  • Stan - 2012-03-05 15:56

      edwardsch - 2012-03-05 16:10

Do you know his parents? Maybe they did not do a good enough job!!!!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-05 16:54

@JJ, agreed.. But then there is no difference between them and Elle. But Elle certainly has a lot to say about it when it happens, but she is equally at fault..

  • VaMbozha - 2012-03-05 16:05

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-05 16:42

I see Modor is breeding new trolls again, where the hell is those bloody hobbits!!

      dave.gwani - 2012-03-05 16:59

What's generally pass comments when its a black-white-crime. White-on-white is just one of those things that are just an accident & highly exceptional. Think rapist in Roodeport area, think drive-by shooting in Pretoria...these are exceptions. White crime does not exist. One person who must not escape victimasation in this case is the judge. Come on guys let us hear it

      Morama - 2012-03-05 18:53

@Pointblank,stop being racist man and grow up...your attitude won't take you nowhre...whatch this site next year this time of the year...it would be full of what you call trolls...i wasn't aware that u are like that!!! As for the convicted....good riddance...job well done!!!

      Mikkel - 2012-03-06 08:24

      Morama you need some education.

  • Daz - 2012-03-05 16:07

  • Archie - 2012-03-05 16:17

Editor what have you done with my comment?

  • Tshiamo - 2012-03-05 16:30

People who took Slim Shady's lyrics literally are all in jail!

  • Michelle - 2012-03-05 16:31

Finally closure for the victim’s family...though it will never bring back Erin at least this person has been removed from society...doesn’t matter what skin colour...crime has no colour only people with no respect and consciences for another human beings life… but justice has been served ...none of us can judge his upbringing only god will judge...

  • de.s.lindsay - 2012-03-05 16:42

Does ad nauseam obsession with race make you are racist? I'm beginning to think so.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-05 16:46

It eventually turns you, I have seen it with my own eyes. People start nobly but crumble under the immense weight of racial slander..

      John - 2012-03-05 18:20

No it doesn't. Those with an obsession are racist. All it does is to show their ignorance...

      Elle-Black - 2012-03-06 07:03

      @ Pointblank finally you understand.

  • Dhavandran - 2012-03-05 16:47

forget about race and lets punish the offenders. well done judge hlope but keep an eye on the constitution because its going to be killed next.arrange for it to be in a witness protection programme if you care about democracy, justice and the independance of the judiciary and the constitution.

  • Matlose - 2012-03-05 16:50

Nice job President Judge Hlophe, Malema would love that as well.

  • jurgen.eksteen - 2012-03-05 16:56

I still love my brother and my family also does regardless of what is posted here. We know him and what happened was not normal and totally out of character with him. Our sympathies to the Van Rensburg family. A life lost and another ruined ... no-one is the winner here.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-05 17:02

I suggest you don't read these comments, it's going to get really ugly from here on...

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-03-05 17:05

no one is the winner? there is no sympathy for your brother.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-03-05 17:07

Acceptance of his deeds, and support...I wish your family strength.

      Hugo - 2012-03-05 18:14

      justice wins

      John - 2012-03-05 18:24

I commend you on your courage to make a posting/admission on here. Unfortunately many nameless commentators on here don't have the same courage. My thoughts and sympathies with both families.

      Donny Doncaster - 2012-03-05 22:01

I hope your brother gets the help he (desperately) needs, and I hope the girls' family finds peace.

      cosmos.ndebele - 2012-03-06 00:53

Its people like your deranged brother who damage this country s image. He is killer, deserves his 30yrs behind bars. His profile fits that of a serial killer lucky enough he was caught early otherwise countless families will be moaning here. You love your killer brother its okay, but we hate him here.

      inwardk - 2012-03-06 01:26

I find it hard to believe that your brother is usually someone who is filled with love and empathy and respect for women, and that he just had a "bad day". This seems like a calculated murder and humiliation. This is not a one day phenomenon. This guy has a nasty, distrusting, vindictive, entitled personality.

      Elle-Black - 2012-03-06 07:05

@ jurgen you have a right to love your brother, that does not excuse what he did though,he ruined his own life and the victim's family's lives.

  • bluzulu - 2012-03-05 19:44

Where are Two of the Four dogs that killed a homeless man in cold blood. This country's fascism sucks!!!!

      Hallo - 2012-03-05 22:29

  • Zainab - 2012-03-05 20:03

People please stop saying he didnt know wat he was doing coz really, if he didnt know wat he was doing he wudnt have thought of how to hide her body or get rid of her phone etc! jakobus eksteen is a 1st degree murderer and i hope he gets all of the things he did to erin done to him in jail and he doesnt make it out in his 30 year pathetic sentence. he deserves life!

  • Sarita De Villiers - 2012-03-05 20:30

How come we don't read in the papers what really happened.I mean after 3 years I would love to hear what and why did things go so wrong and just like in any other case the detail!May both families find the courage to move on.

  • phathuchicos - 2012-03-05 21:07

Wow a computer science students doing that...knew something is not right with supernerds this days due to their inability to interact with other people well.

      Mikkel - 2012-03-06 08:26

      Uhh huh?

  • Lulama - 2012-03-06 07:53

What a sad story for both of them and their families. I just can't help wondering if she led him on for this whole time and then just broke his heart out of the blue. That is not to say that she deserved to die like she did but I am just wondering whether or not she played him along and then dropped him.

  • Cristina - 2012-03-06 08:29
