Johannesburg - A former police constable was fined R10 000 or six months in prison for corruption by the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Monday.
Magistrate Amrith Chabillal sentenced Thanduxolo Mbeke, 31, to an additional two years in jail, conditionally suspended for five years.
Mbeke accepted a R1 500 bribe for a bus's police clearance certificate.
He pleaded guilty and received a letter to say that his appeal against his dismissal had been rejected.
In November last year, the Western Cape directorate for public prosecutions authorised a trap after Mbeke requested R2 000 from bus owner Moosa Moolla.
Moolla reported him to the Cape Town central vehicle identification section (VIS), which assisted in the arrest by providing R1 500 in police money.
A month later, Moolla returned to the VIS and gave Mbeke the money. He accepted it and issued the certificate without checking the bus' engine number.
