Johannesburg - A former police officer was arrested on Thursday after he was found in possession of police blue lights, sirens and handcuffs in Mayfair, Johannesburg police said.

"The 53-year-old former colonel resigned from the police in 2008. He was also found in possession of cash," said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

Police were alerted by residents about a car parked on the side of the road for several hours.

"There were three occupants inside the vehicle. The members called for back-up and one of the occupants of the car, a Ford Fiesta, left before the police back-up could arrive," said Kweza.

Police searched the car and recovered eight stolen cellular phones.

"The two suspects in the Ford were taken to the police station. The third suspect was later arrested after police found cash, police blue lights police sirens, handcuffs and a police identity card hidden inside his car."

Kweza said the man would be charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, impersonating a police officer and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

She said they would appear in court soon.
