Bloemfontein - A former detective sergeant and his accomplice, who were caught breaking into the offices of the detective branch in Hertzogville, were found guilty of trespassing and malicious damage to property in the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

They were each fined R1 500 or three months imprisonment and R300 or 20 days imprisonment for malicious damage to property.

Moses Monyane, 40, a former detective sergeant, and Johannes Mhlotshana, 34, were found inside the offices of the detective branch in Hertzogville last Friday after the police were informed by a passerby that there were people inside the building after hours.

They could not explain to the police their reasons for being inside the building and were arrested on the spot.

“We believe he was searching for the docket in another case. It was not there, however, as it is handled by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI),” police spokesperson Sergeant Thabo Litabe told News24 earlier.
