Johannesburg - A former lover of one of the two men accused
of the brutal murder of two siblings in Northcliff, Johannesburg, has revealed
she was present when they were killed, The Star reported on Tuesday.
The woman, a State witness in the case, is a former lover of
one of the accused, Paul Mundel, the newspaper reported. She is under witness
protection.
Siblings Gary Smith and Karen Buchanan were murdered in
their home in March 2008. They were bound, gagged, had their teeth pulled out
and darts thrown at them. Buchanan was raped. Both were shot.
The accused, Mundel and Kenneth Schroder, are facing charges
of murder, rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of a
firearm.
In affidavits submitted as part of their bail application,
the woman says that a year after the killings, Mundel kidnapped and raped her
for several days to intimidate her not to tell the police about the murders.
According to the newspaper, State prosecutor advocate
Nerrisa Muller said the woman revealed the siblings were killed for explosives
the alleged killers were looking for.
Mundel's lawyer, Piet du Plessis, dismissed the woman's
claims, saying she was a scorned lover out for revenge.
Judgment on the bail applications is expected to be handed
down in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
