Cape Town - A man was sentenced to 30 years in jail by the Western Cape High Court on Monday for killing his ex-lover and assaulting another woman.
Honest Sipho Dyakopu, 30, appeared in court before Judge John Hlophe where he entered into a plea and sentencing agreement.
He admitted to stabbing to death his ex-lover Nenziwe Dyantyana and to assaulting Masibulelo Mpompo in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, on 25 February this year.
He was given five years for assault and 30 years for murder. The sentences would run concurrently.
Dyantyana and Dyakopu had been in a relationship, but broke it off in December 2010.
Dyantyana ran to her sister's house in February to hide from her ex-lover and told Mpompo, a guest at the house, to tell him she was not there.
Dyakopu admitted to storming into the house and stabbing Mpompo in the arm. He then went to the bedroom where he found Dyantyana hiding under the duvet cover.
He pulled the duvet off her, stabbed her 25 times, dragged her outside and fled the house.
