Welkom - A huge explosion rocked Welkom, in the Free State, early on Saturday evening, Netwerk24 reported.

Smoke could be seen billowing above the central business district at about 17:30. 

Radio station OFM said cars and homes had been damaged and the explosion was felt many kilometres away. 

According to unconfirmed reports six people were injured.

Police spokesperson Ketabile Mofokeng said an Eskom sub-station behind the traffic department had "blown up".

She confirmed that the police and emergency workers were at the scene, but she didn’t know if anyone had been injured.
