Extra R60m for upkeep of Free State roads

Bloemfontein - Road maintenance in the Free State received another R60.1m in the provincial adjustment budget on Thursday.
Free State finance MEC Seiso Mohai said some R53.5m roll-over funds from the previous financial year were earmarked for the maintenance of provincial roads.
A further amount of R6.5m was found by reprioritising government spending to road maintenance.
"As a province we had no option but to reprioritise within the allocated budget for the 2012/13 financial year," said Mohai.
Total funding available for the provincial adjustment budget was R934m, he said in the provincial legislature.
The MEC urged government departments to do things differently and to completely eradicate inefficiencies within the system.
"We urge departments and public entities, again, to continue to remain within their baselines."
Mohai said non-core or low priority programs must be scaled down.
He said the focus had shifted now to efficiency in supply chain management and service delivery towards government priorities.
An amount of R244m was also earmarked for improvement in conditions of service.
It is to cover higher than expected wage settlements, a shortfall of two percent.
