Extreme weather warning for parts of SA

2012-07-13 08:40

Cape Town - South Africa - and five provinces in particular - has been warned to expect extreme weather over the weekend.

The South African Weather Service issued a warning to residents of the Western Cape, the Northern Cape, the Eastern Cape, southern Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, reported the Timeslive.co.za.

The warning said a cut-off low pressure system and cold front would move over the country on Friday 13 July, bringing very cold conditions, heavy rainfall, snow and strong winds.

Snow was forecast for mountainous areas in the south-western Western Cape and for the eastern Eastern Cape by Friday night.

Temperatures would drop below freezing in certain parts of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Eastern Cape and snow could be expected in areas where it had not snowed in a long time or even at all.

news24 weather reports and weather articles aren't worth the electrons they are printed on !

      martin.ferguson.7311 - 2012-07-13 09:21

Why did you read it then?

      mrp721 - 2012-07-13 09:51

Strange how you open up the links to read and comment then isn't it??? And by the way they get info given to them by the weather services so don't attack the messenger DUUUHHHHH...

      patrick.buckley.712 - 2012-07-13 11:53

Why so negative? Chin up guys, summer is a snow flake away. We really are spoilt with fairy tale weather in this country. The two ugly sisters (June & July) are almost behind us.

      Henk - 2012-07-13 12:23

Say that to the sheep farmers in the Karoo, Chop!!!

      matches.matthews - 2012-07-13 13:48

It is only a prediction - the may report it is fact but it is still only a prediction. Maybe a case for the BCCSA, that the weather report is portrayed as truth.

  • shellerjc.rjc - 2012-07-13 09:24

Just love how JHB is always omitted from these. Yes we hardly ever get snow, BUT we do end up being hit with the freezing winds when the cape etc have snow.

      vlarismam - 2012-07-13 10:03

      So not fair!

      Henk - 2012-07-13 12:24

Why fight over the news and weather? News24 is reporting news as they receive it from sources.

  • matthew.starkey - 2012-07-13 10:14

It's scary that you still see such emotionally charged commenting on an article about the weather.

      mulalo.makhale - 2012-07-13 10:44

Lol, You couldn't have said it any better.

Does anyone know if there is worthwhile snow in the Drakensburg yet, I would love to take my small grandchildren to see snow ??

  • jacqueline.engelbrecht.54 - 2012-07-13 11:09

Snow on the Outeniqua Mountains in George! And I agree that the article is very poorly written. Why is the snowfall in George not mentioned or the predicted snow fall for Aliwal North over the weekend? Why are the average low temperatures not mentioned. It's very easy to say it's going to be bloody cold in most of the country!

      lmosterd - 2012-07-13 12:16

Love outeniqua..send us some pics please?

      sduplessis - 2012-07-14 09:42

Snow on the Outeniqua mountains is very common. happens almost every year. But i must say.. it looks stunning this year.

  • samanthavanzyl - 2012-07-13 15:22

Can definately feel an icy chill in the air today. I keep convincing myself that winter will help me quit smoking. Each time I feel the urge, I just pop my head out the office door and then run back to my heater! It works! Hope to see some snow on the Helderberg Mtns. We even had a patch of snow last year NOVEMBER? Hhhm anything can happen in the Cape :)

  • Adair - 2012-07-13 21:04

    Roll on summer!

  • amir.i.warraich - 2012-07-13 22:19

I will visit the Cape region by the end of this month and compared to a UK/north European climate, should I bring with me the Helly Hansen jacket or something warmer? Cheers,

I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE EXTREME WEATHER THAT WAS REPORTED FOR KZN SOUTH COAST SINCE YESTERDAY. AT 10PM LAST NIGHT WE WERE WALKING NEXT TO OUR BEACH IN PALM BEACH AND IT WAS FINE WEATHER. TODAY IT IS JUST OVERCAST BUT NOT FREEZING AS REPORTED FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS.

      Leah - 2012-07-15 08:38

And the mizzie weather came during the night with a vengeance! Stay warm :)

  • Bois-TĂȘte - 2012-07-14 08:53

  • amanda - 2012-07-14 13:56

Does anyone know which mountains in the Western Cape have snow on them? I can see the Hottentots Holland Mountains from my vantage point in Simonstown and last year there was snow high up on the Helderberg - I think if my memory serves me correctly it was in late July/August.

  • amanda - 2012-07-14 13:58

Im certainly not driving to the Karoo to see the snow! Need somwhere closer. Lol.
