FS cop held for girl's death
Johannesburg - A 44-year-old police inspector was arrested on Tuesday evening for allegedly shooting dead a high school pupil during a protest against preliminary matric exams at a Free State school.
"The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) took over the investigation... and arrested the policeman after a murder case was opened," Colonel Motantsi Makhele said on Wednesday.
Nontsikelelo Anna Nokela, aged 17, was shot and killed in Allanridge near Welkom on Monday.
ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said police claimed they were pelted with stones when they arrived at the Wesi and Mosala secondary schools.
"One officer fired a warning shot which hit the ground, then went up and struck the girl," he said.
Nokela was rushed to hospital in a police van, but was declared dead on arrival, he said.
