Bloemfontein - A Free State mom fought back as a robber repeatedly stabbed her with a broken bottle, thinking of her young children and how she wanted to give her son a hug on his third birthday.

“I just had to fight back. I just knew I didn’t want my husband and children to come back later that afternoon to a bloodbath. My children are just too small,” Nadia Gibbens, 31, told Volksblad.

Gibbens was stabbed repeatedly with a broken bottle on their smallholding in Bainsvlei in Bloemfontein.

Her son Greg turned 3 on Tuesday. She also had a 1-year-old daughter called Charlotte.

The suspect fled with money and Gibbens pushed the panic button. Police found the suspect in the area as he was buying a cooldrink, presumably with the money he had stolen.

Gibbens had to undergo a lengthy operation to stitch up the many stab wounds she had sustained to her back, head and shoulder.

This happened when the robber broke a large glass cooldrink bottle on her head and attacked her with it.

Police said the suspect had seen the back door open and saw Gibbens’s husband and children leave the property.

Quentin Gibbens praised police for their quick action and his wife for her tough attitude.

“I can’t describe how helpless I felt on the way home. But she’s a real fighter. A real tough cookie,” he said on Wednesday.
