Cape Town - Former president FW de Klerk has been taken off a ventilator and his condition is good, a spokesperson has said.
Dave Steward, Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation, told News24 de Klerk's condition was "improving all the time".
He said that although de Klerk was still under sedation, doctors at the Panorama Medi-Clinic in Cape Town were very happy with his progress. He was apparently still not able to communicate, but periodically regained consciousness.
Steward said de Klerk's prognosis was good.
His wife Elita, his daughter Suzanne and brother Willem were at the hospital on Monday.
De Klerk underwent a colon operation last week and subsequently suffered complications.
