'Facebook rapist' case postponed

2012-03-20 14:18
Cape Town - "Facebook rapist" Thabo Bester appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with a model's murder.

He stood in the dock before Magistrate Mendy Tyulu with five correctional services guards around him.

Prosecutor Nopelo Nhantsi asked for the case to be moved to the Western Cape High Court for a pre-trial conference. The defence did not object. Tyulu granted the request and asked Bester, 23, whether he understood what was going on.

He told Bester: "You will be kept at Pollsmoor Prison from today [Tuesday] until finalisation of this trial process."

The pre-trial conference was set down for April 13.

Bester, of Eikenhof, Johannesburg, stands accused of murdering 26-year-old model Nomfundo Tyulu in Milnerton in September. She was found stabbed in the chest in a room in a bed and breakfast.

Bester was dubbed the "Facebook rapist" because he used social media to lure women throughout the country. He told them international modelling scouts were interested in them and then met them in person. He then allegedly raped and robbed them at knife-point.

He was sentenced to 50 years' imprisonment by a Durban court in October for raping and robbing two models.

Bester, who police said had various accounts on Facebook under different names, reputedly used 13 aliases, the most common being Thomas Bester. He is thought to have committed a string of crimes in Cape Town, Durban and Gauteng.

Prison guards kept an eye on the public gallery for most of his appearance and surrounded him as he was led, shackled, back to the cells.
