Facebook status saves mum during robbery

2012-03-05 09:13

Johannesburg - A Pretoria mother who was attacked by two armed robbers in her home on Friday night managed to summon help by updating her Facebook status, it was reported on Monday.

Lizette Langeveld, 43, was confronted by two armed men who broke into her Centurion home around 19:30, physically assaulted her and threatened to rape her, the Beeld reported.

They tied her up in her bedroom together with her 10-year-old son, took her cellphone and told her they would wait for her husband to come home and kill him.

She managed to free both her son and herself and they hid inside her wardrobe with her laptop computer.

She updated her Facebook status, saying "Please help! We have an armed robbery, they're waiting for Hennie at the gate, please phone him, don't let him come inside."

A second message was posted a few minutes later, saying "Help! Call Hennie. We've managed to untie ourselves. They said they would come back to rape me. Armed."

One of Langeveld's friends saw the message on Facebook, and alerted Hennie Langeveld immediately.
Police and security guards arrived on the scene within minutes, but the robbers had fled.

Way to keep her wits about her! a smartphone is probably a better tactical choice, but one uses what is at one's disposal in these situations.

      ralph.schminke - 2012-03-05 10:39

uhh read much ?? ... they took her phone

      JasonEye - 2012-03-05 10:40

Read what I have written. I actually said "but one uses what is at one's disposal in these situations". You can safely assume I can read with comprehension and am not a complete moron.

  • felican - 2012-03-05 11:17

Wish with all my heart they would bring back the DEATH PENALTY for aggressive crimes or as one of the politicians in the New Democratic South Africa said so long ago.. Have prisoner ships anchored outside on the sea..Too many already in jails languishing and enjoying the fruits of their adventures. What about having chain gangs again and using the prisoners as much needed labour in farms and building etc.. We really are not going forward but backwards... So why not use the measures that were before....At least chain gang labour will be earning their keep in their 'Sun Cities'

  • Den - 2012-03-05 11:19

people must start thinking about placing weapons and cell phones for emergency use around the house. work out your weak points and points of entry to your houses. pepper spray, knives and other such weapons are still very legal.

      arthurbrigg - 2012-03-05 13:54

Web cameras as well, one or two outside and one or two inside with motion detection software (it's not that expensive). You can at least have a record on video of what happened and be alerted to intruders.

Who says facebook is a waste of time!! Good work woman!

  • Kirsten - 2012-03-05 16:00

thankfully the people liking comments suggesting this woman deserved it- and disliking ones that bid her well done can be viewed- and then entered into a private investigation. Anyone stupid enough to toy with emotions and like a comment just to cause trouble deserve the interrogation. Think before you like or dislike to those who are yet to grow up...

Enough already. Government DO SOMETHING about rampant crime and incompetent policemen. You got rid of all of the old school policemen barring a few, and, for the most part, hired idiots. FIX IT! All very well for you to live in your mansions surrounded by dozens of bodyguards, you are supposed to serve us and protect us so DO IT!!

  • Rebaone - 2012-03-05 20:10

Good work lady. You have shown that Facebook is not only a social nertwork but that you can actually get help from it.

  • geoffreywaugh - 2012-03-06 12:19

Well done lizette!! What the hell is happening to centurion!? So many armed robberies. What are the police doing, diddly squat! Sadly residents should be encouraged to shoot these neanderthals in the face before our under incentivised police force and very cute legal system has the opportunity to completely f*ck it up!
