Johannesburg - A Johannesburg factory worker survived a 24m fall through the roof of a building in Robertsham on Wednesday night, said paramedics.

The man was painting a section of the roof at the time, said Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

He stood on a fibreglass panel that was unable to bear his weight, it disintegrated and he fell to the factory floor below, landing on an empty drum, Wicks said.

The man sustained severe head trauma and was taken to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in a critical condition, he said.

The labour department was investigating.
