Durban - Five people accused of faking a death to collect life insurance appeared in the Durban Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday.
The case against three sisters - Zodwa Ngcobo, Thulile Madondo, and Zandile Linda - was postponed to October 22 for a plea.
Sibongiseni Thabethe and Brian Khumalo would appear in court again on November 20. Their matter was postponed for further investigations.
Captain Thulani Zwane said that on Saturday the five accused apparently used a stolen identity document, belonging to Mandisa Mkhwebula, without her knowledge, to take out death cover.
"After nine months of paying monthly premiums, they declared her dead and prepared the necessary documents with home affairs, a funeral parlour and a doctor to enable them to claim," said Zwane.
A 47-year-old Isipingo doctor allegedly supplied a blank death notification form to the sisters to help them make the claim. The doctor, Aime Callixte Bakundukze, would appear alongside Thabethe and Khumalo at their next court date.
