Johannesburg – The State not only paid for security upgrades to President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla complex in KwaZulu-Natal.

It was revealed on Sunday that the department of public works also used R248m of taxpayers’ money on a gate for cattle and new homes for three families who had to move to make way for the Nkandla upgrade, reported Rapport.

This was revealed in secret documents written by government ministers on the project and which had been obtained by journalists.

Mandisa Fatyela-Lindie, the acting director general of public works, said it would be premature to respond to “specific details” about the project.

Her department was investigating costs and tender procedures.

The auditor general and the public protector were busy with similar projects.
