Family fight over R7.5m Lotto win

2011-09-23 11:03

Port Elizabeth - A Port Elizabeth man and his sister have taken their bitter battle over millions of rands won in a July 2006 jackpot to court.

The siblings had one of two tickets for the R15m lotto, reported the TimesLive.

According to Belinda Groener, the money is hers and her brother, John, wrongfully wrote his name on her lucky Lotto ticket.

But John refutes this and says he is the sole and legitimate owner of the ticket.

The Groener family were once very close, it has been reported, with the family deciding together who would choose Lotto numbers.

One family member would then buy the ticket and return it to everyone.

According to John, the winner alone got the money.

Belinda said she bought the ticket from their brother, Desmond Arthur, while John said their sister, Rauwela, bought the ticket at his request using his number and money.

Belinda stated in court documents that after finding out about the lucky ticket, she wanted to invest the money for all the siblings and had asked John to help her because she had trusted him.

Money the root of all evil

      Percy Higgins - 2011-09-23 11:20

Not the money but the love of it.

      Craig Murray - 2011-09-23 11:39

Don’t believe money has anything to do with evil, its poor upbringing.

      sipholess - 2011-09-23 11:43

Not money nor the love of it...........People,just people are the root of all evil.

      Matt :-) - 2011-09-23 11:48

Gambling is just wrong, period. Rather work for your money...

      Captainmorgan - 2011-09-23 11:53

Bar coded id's should be scanned & the number should appear on all lotto tickets at point of sale , this would solve several problems 1)No doubt as to ticket owner 2)No sale to under age customers 3)No fraud when multiple winners are declared 4)Forgetful winners can be found

      MeChirping - 2011-09-23 12:10

hell CaptainMorgan, never thought of that as a solution, give this man a bells or will it be a RUM

      Kenno - 2011-09-23 12:30

Posession is 9 tenths of the law! Whoever has the ticket, should cash it and MOVE ON !!!

      MojoBa - 2011-09-23 12:32

      Common is as common does!!!

      position08 - 2011-09-23 13:12

@Captainmorgan & MeChirping: no, this isn't a solution, many colleagues, families, lotto 'clubs' and syndicates buy tickets and this kind of "one ID number on a ticket" thing would be a huge problem.

      McDaNife - 2011-09-23 13:18

Sure they have taken some tips from our government

      mj - 2011-09-23 13:36

well with lawyers or advocates ALSO involved it gets more evil.

      M-POWER - 2011-09-23 13:41

The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

      DeonL - 2011-09-23 13:41

Too many people hate money, this is why thy don't keep some.

      iYess... - 2011-09-23 13:57

@ Kenno - When Malema's idjits take your property, are you going to respond with "Posession is 9 tenths of the law!"? Me thinks not.

      Ohmikehunt - 2011-09-23 14:00

Yes and sigh @TAM... Goes to show that the grass isn't always Groener on the other side :P

      daaivark - 2011-09-23 14:04

On this, for once, Matt and I agree. I don't gamble - not even in the form of lotteries. Not for religious reasons, but because I believe in the value of working for what one has.

      MojoBa - 2011-09-23 14:23

And by the way. Why did they have to lock the ticket away in the first place. If it was me, my family would be as happy for me as I would be. Common, common, common.

      Royal_Bee - 2011-09-23 15:28

Good one Captain Morgan. I'll drink to thaaat! Whoever dislikes your comment is a chop! *no-homo*

      Bratt - 2011-09-23 16:27

Be wise like Solomon. Threaten to cut the thing up in little pieces. If ticket already handed in, threaten to donate the money to their most hated neighbour or charity(not implying charity is to be hated). Whoever says, 'rather give it to the other one' can keep the money. They would probably share anyway.

      LUFC - 2011-09-23 17:08

Money isnt evil. Greed is evil. Money is just a means.

  • ANC Comrade - 2011-09-23 11:11

Split the money! Just shows you that money is the root of all evil!

      Ke maketse - 2011-09-23 11:36

They would rather spend the money on a lawyer than split it in the family

      ANC support - 2011-09-23 12:20

Buy your own ticket and you will not have this problem!

      Kenno - 2011-09-23 12:31

@ANC support Agree with your comment, but NOT your handle. LOL

  • Trevor Obery - 2011-09-23 11:13

ANC Support: You need to learn to spell before you comment on my posts... PLUS, I only read it because I thought there might be a fmaily murder or something involved, or that the fight was between the siblings and the Lotto company. Not each other. I thought maybe the Lotto company went back on their deal because of some mistake.

I guess the Groener family were never really close as this report states. If money split them like that, they deserve the heartache and pain they get. i hope their legal costs take all of it.
