Johannesburg - The family of a jogger who was killed in a hit and run accident are furious that the man who pleaded guilty in the case may get away with little more than a slap on the wrist.

The driver of the car, Gunter Geyer, who also goes by the name of Gunter van Rensburg, is apparently the son of National Prosecuting Authority acting head Karen van Rensburg and a rugby player from Pretoria, reported The Star.

He pleaded guilty to drunken driving and culpable homicide after the accident in which Louis Nel was killed and a friend jogging with him was knocked unconscious.

The Nel family were informed that Geyer might only be sentenced to community service and house arrest at night and despite their protest, they fear the State would push ahead with this proposal for sentencing.

“They told us there weren’t enough police to monitor house arrest properly and all they could do was phone every night to check if he was home,” said Rene Nel.

Her daughter, Paulet, said it was unacceptable that a drunk driver who had killed someone could get away with such a light sentence.

“Could life be so cheap?” she asked.

The daughter started a Facebook petition and got an overwhelming response.

“It is time to take drunken driving and speeding seriously and impose proper consequences. I’m afraid that a slap on the wrist and a fine is just not adequate for such a serious matter,” Paulet wrote in the petition.

According to the National Road Traffic Act, there is jail time of six to nine years that can be asked for with culpable homicide, said Caro Smit from South Africans Against Drunken Driving.
