Pietermaritzburg - A 13-year-old has vowed never to get into
her mother’s car again, after a snake fell onto her feet while they were
reversing out of their driveway on Saturday.
Megan Volsum told The Witness she was sitting comfortably in
the front passenger seat of their VW Polo next to her mum, Glenda, who was
driving, and with her cousin, Sheila, 16, sitting at the back.
Glenda was reversing out when Megan saw a snake
rolling out of the dashboard. It landed on her foot.
“At first, I thought it was a rubber snake and that someone
was joking around.”
But it was no joke.
'Cold and scaly'
She said the snake felt “cold” and “scaly”.
“I jumped to the back and dived out of the car,” she said.
Then everyone started screaming.
She said it was black and grey, and had reddish eyes. “I’ll
never get in the car again. I’m dead serious.”
She said she was shaken by the incident.
Glenda, 47, said the whole thing happened in a split second.
With no time to stop the car, she also jumped out of the
car, which rolled a little way before she managed to pull up the handbrake.
“It was quite traumatic. I’m now petrified to get in the
car,” she said.
However, she said she was glad that it didn’t happen on the
road while she was driving.
Traumatised
Sheila said she was also traumatised.
“The car wouldn’t stop. My door wouldn’t open, so I had to
jump onto the other side.”
Sheila only saw the snake when they were all out of the car.
“I ran inside [the house]. I closed the door just in case it
came after me.”
She said everyone started getting hysterical, even those who
were inside the house and hadn’t seen the snake.
“I think the snake was after me,” Sheila joked.
No sign has been found of the
slithery car invader, despite extensive searches of the car. The car is back on the road now.
