Family wiped out in Pretoria crash

2011-09-15 08:40

Pretoria - A family of four, including two young children, were killed when the car they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus on Moloto Road in Pretoria on Thursday, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said that a female passenger's legs were also partially severed as she was flung from the bus during the collision at 06:00.

"She is critical and will be transported to Unitas Hospital. We are hoping to save her limbs.

"The children are younger than 8-years-old. It's a very sad start to the day to have an entire family wiped out," he said.

Thirty-one other passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Banks said the exact cause of the accident was not known.

Tragic accident. You cannot blame Moloto road for this one. Reports now say the woman was driving with her child on her lap.

      Wittes - 2011-09-15 10:26

@willieman. I would of thought they are all African, or can't whites be African in their own country?

According to some reports the wife was driving (not relevant) BUT, apparently she had the 1 year old on her lap (very relevant).

RIP ... Moloto road and a bus are a deadly combination

  • Gadafi007 - 2011-09-15 09:21

Moloto road has been taking lives since i got in gauteng in 2001 .Problem is with this bus drivers ,they drive like they are running from some huge tornado and overtakes anytime they want .i hate putco buses

      Sam - 2011-09-15 09:32

you are right these bus driver over take anywhere even if the the roads doesn't allow it, they do so. Why are these bus bus driver rush for check their speed, it's over 100 all the way before 6am

      Abby - 2011-09-15 10:03

I wonder if the Putco drivers even have licences? These people don't care if they have the lives of people in their hands.

  • giftmk - 2011-09-15 09:35

We have always said it: PUTCO BUSSES ARE NOT ROADWORTHY & SOME1 IS PROTECTING THEM.Why are other busses and taxis investigated after an accident but Putco busses are not, only the road is blamed. drive around gauteng in any direction and see if you cant see a stuck Putco bus. Why are Putco busses the only ones allowed to load over 150 passengers?

      elmien nel - 2011-09-15 10:08

What exactly does roadworthyness have to do with this? It appears to be a case of idiot driver syndrome. I am failing to see the relevance of your opinion.

  • Zinde - 2011-09-15 09:37

Bus drivers are like Taxi drivers, they do one style of bad driving because they got this tendency of closing the gaps if someone overtakes if they were travelling 80Km and they see you coming they quickly increase a speed so that you can hardly enter on your line. i think they discuss this on offpeak hours.

  • Lonewolfman - 2011-09-15 09:38

No matter what happened we pay respect to the dead and wish those left behind including the injured a speedy recovery.

  • SGL - 2011-09-15 09:42

RIP all the victims and condolences to their family and friends. Another Putco bus I suppose. When are they going to do something about that road?!

  • Zinde - 2011-09-15 09:56

WHERE IS MOLOTO CORRIDOR. this bus drivers they going to kill our parents, BUS DRIVERS ARE FROM TAXI DRIVERS, think putco must send this drivers to special driving school and minimum requirements . Matric, driving licence, pdp, special driving school certificate and be checked from AARTO.

  • deren - 2011-09-15 10:00

@Whirlpool it doesnt matter if they know or not, so what you are saying you dont pray for strangers and your community/ world you need to Wake up this only means that you are a self centred selfish inhumane creature

  • Coconut - 2011-09-15 10:03

The Moloto Road does it AGAIN!!!!!! When will the authorities decide to do something about this HELL Road? This is virtually a daily occurrence.

  • MSHAZIE - 2011-09-15 10:04

    SHAME....

  • Lee - 2011-09-15 10:07

Not only that WhirlPool there could be many family memebers and people who know them that might also comment on this forum on a daily basis that would appreciate our condolences. In fact many a time I have seen people on this forum that know the families or parties involved in a death of some sort. So yes, they can hear you.

  • Wayne - 2011-09-15 10:08

Let me say this, i have family on that road and have used it many a time. The drivers of those busses are real road bastards. They over take as they feel I myself have been pushed of the road, not once but twice! The operate those busy as if they are on a suicide mission. and please dont comment and say "who says the car was in the wrong" Moloto road has made news on more than one occasion and usually a bus is involved!

  • frans.mosia - 2011-09-15 10:11

Very sad indeed,May their soul rest in peace.Guys life is short!

  • ThabaNchu - 2011-09-15 10:36

The accident which occured today is not the last: Solution 1. Let work and businesses be decentralised. 2. Rail-line would be safer than road travelling. 3. Take away traffic cops from JHB to Moloto road. 3. Broaden the road to a highway four lanes.

we drove yesterday morning at 6hoo between Moorreesburg and Malmesbury. A Intercape bus full of passengers with trailer, overtake us with a big truck in front of us IN THE THICK MIST. Next moment a Taz car infront which had to stop on the yellow line, next 2 seconds a big truck came from the front. IT WAS 99.9% and all that people were gone - and we involved in huge accident. THE BUS DRIVERS ARE NOT CAPABLE TO THERE JOB. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BUS MAITANENCE OR HAVE TO REPORT IT AT LEAST AND TAKE CARE OF THE PASSENGERS. THEY NOT! ALL THE BUS DRIVERS MUST RE-LICENSE LIKE THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS HAVE TO DO YEARLY. It was shocking to watch a huge accident with lots of people involved. with us included. 084 444 3840

a INTERCAPE BUS over take us yesterday morning at 6hoo between Moorreesburg and Malmesbury. In THICK MIST he miss a TAZ car and a huge truck wich came our way. CRAZY - ALL THE BUS DRIVERS MUST GO LIKE THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS FOR A 6 WEEK COURSE WITH EXAMS BEFORE THEY MUST GO ON THE ROAD. AND YEARLY REDO THEIR LICENSES. They have no clue about safety. It was yesterday morning a split second and we with a bus filled of passengers were out in the fields ..... All maintenance of busses are the driver responsibility. He know his bus and have to report immediately. The drivers are the cause of all this bus accidents and people are dying all over. TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT - OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!!
