Farm attack - killer shot dead
Durban - One of the four men arrested in connection with the murder of three people on a farm in Mooi River was shot dead by police on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
“One of the suspects arrested for the murders at Sherwood Farm in Mooi River was killed by police after he managed to disarm one of the police officials and attempted to shoot him,” said Lieutenant Colonel Jay Naicker.
The four men were arrested by the Pietermaritzburg organised crime unit earlier on Wednesday in connection with the murder of farm owner Lorraine Karg, 58, and her two workers Hilda Linane, 34, and Zakhewo Mhlongo, 66.
Naicker said the man was shot dead while he and one of his fellow suspects were having their fingerprints taken at the community service centre in Mooi River.
“It is alleged that one of the men managed to disarm the police official who was taking his fingerprints and fired a shot.
"Another police official who was in the vicinity returned fire in the direction of the suspect, 31, fatally wounding him,” said Naicker.
Police on the scene were waiting for the arrival of an official from the Independent Complaints Directorate.
The four men were arrested in Hlatikulu in Mooi River. A 9mm pistol and knives were found on them during the arrest.
The four men had been expected to appear in the Mooi River Magistrate's Court on July 30 on charges of murder and robbery.
Last week, Wednesday Karg was found with her throat cut and Linane and Mhlongo were found stabbed to death.
Naicker said Karg and her husband Neville had been at home when they noticed fire on their grazing land.
An alarm was raised for employees to assist and the Kargs and other farm workers tried to extinguish the fire, said Naicker.
Lorraine Karg returned to the farmhouse to fetch tools to fight the fire.
When she arrived at the house, she was attacked by two men.
Police believed the killers deliberately set the fire and had not expected the Kargs to return to the house so soon.
The house was ransacked, but nothing seemed to have been taken, police said.
