Mahikeng - People who attack farmers should be permanently
removed from society, North West Premier Thandi Modise said on Monday.
"Perpetrators of violence against our farming
community, particularly the vulnerable elderly, should have no place in society
but be permanently removed," she said.
Modise was reacting to the murder of a Ventersdorp farmer on
Sunday morning. Two men confronted the 67-year-old man outside his house on the
farm Sterkstroom, police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.
They hit him over the head and dragged him into the house.
They found his 64-year-old wife and attacked her. It was believed they also
raped her.
The men tied her up and fled with two cellphones. She managed
to free herself and found help on a neighbouring farm. The farmer died on the
scene. His wife was recovering in hospital in Klerksdorp.
Modise said she was shocked by the attack and called for
action from police.
"We call on police not to leave any stone unturned
until those responsible for the heinous crime are behind bars."
She called on residents with information about the attack to
help police with their investigations.
