Farm murder suspect gets bail
Badplaas - A 66-year-old Mpumalanga farmer was released on R4 000 bail after he appeared in court on a charge of murder.
Pieter Botha, of Engelse Draai farm near Badplaas, appeared in the Carolina Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of murdering 34-year-old Steven van Rooyen and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Botha was arrested on January 26 after midnight at the farmhouse the two men shared with their respective families.
That afternoon, Botha had allegedly showed Van Rooyen how to use a shotgun because the latter wanted to shoot guinea fowl.
Van Rooyen left the house at about 18:00 for the hunt and was found two hours later in the farmyard with a gunshot wound in his cheek. The firearm was lying next to his body.
The Badplaas police learned about the incident from a policeman in Pretoria who had heard about it just before midnight.
