Farmer burnt while fighting fire

2012-08-11 22:41

Potchefstroom - A man sustained multiple burns to his face and hands when he tried to protect his farm on Wilgeboom in Potchefstroom from a veld fire on Saturday, paramedics said.

"The 67-year-old tried to contain the blaze on a veld near his property when the wind changed," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

Bystanders called paramedics and the man was treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

"The elderly man was transported in a stable condition," Vermaak said.

Vermaak said fires destroyed several properties and livestock in August 2011 and farm owners were trying to avoid it from happening again.

Police and the local fire department were assisting the farmers.

True, but fire cannot be prevented. You can burn your firebreaks on time, be prepared in every way possible, but fire can still get you. Strong winds carry those "inyoni's" a long way - you're never really secure against fire. Also, don't dismiss or fight with staff over this perios - revenge by fire is the easiest form of revenge possible. Hope the "oom" recovers soon, been burnt has to be one of the most painful experiences in life.

Our farmers have had it rough lately. I saw the acres and acres that were destroyed by the fire, and including their livestock. Very tough profession. Hope the oom is okay.
