Farmworkers die of home-made beer

2011-04-13 22:15

Johannesburg - An inquest docket had been opened into the deaths of four farm workers after they apparently drank home-made beer, North West police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Thulani Ngubane said: "A man and three women, possibly a family, brewed a home-made beer concoction and consumed it on Sunday, but they all died after being admitted to hospital."

"We have a sample of the concoction and it's being tested for poisons in a laboratory.

"We're investigating all possibilities.

We're questioning the farm owner about visitors that day because they died at their home on the farm where they had worked.

"Perhaps someone visited the house and slipped something into the mixture, or perhaps there had been infighting among the workers."

They probably brew metanol which is poisonous. Dead men tell no tales unfortunately.

Agreed, too high temperature would yield shorter alkanols, i.e. methanol......but how much did they have to consume to die mate?

Perhaps it was the hospital's fault! I think people can stop committing suicide outside hospitals, cut yourself and be admitted to any government hospital, it will kill you quickly and quietly!

Wow!! To much methanol and battery acid. They should have partying with Castle instead....bad choice of ingredients. If they are not at fault, get the bastards who spiked their dop!!! Condolences to their families though.

  • Ares - 2011-04-14 09:02

I suppose its the farmer and apartheid's fault for this....

  • michaelp1 - 2011-04-14 09:30

What has the fact that they were 'farmworkers' got to do with it. Here is the media painting farmers in a bad light ...again.
