Pretoria - The Department of International Relations and Co-operation has summoned the Equatorial Guinea ambassador to South Africa amid growing fears for the safety of a local man imprisoned in Equatorial Guinea’s notorious Black Beach prison.

According to the Sunday Times, Daniel Janse van Rensburg, a South African businessman, was frog-marched off a plane last month after having been escorted on board by embassy officials in the capital Malabo.

Van Rensburg had at the time being staying at the South African embassy in the capital due to threats against his life.

Van Rensburg is being held in the prison allegedly without any charges having been brought against him.

His arrest follows the collapse of a business deal in the country.

Earlier in the week, the SABC reported that Janse van Rensburg's wife feared for his life.

According to the report, Janse van Rensburg, an aviation consultant from Wilderness, in the Southern Cape, was allegedly involved in a deal with a former mayor in Equatorial Guinea.

The SABC reported his wife Melanie as saying that she was very nervous, because her husband's life was in danger, as the former mayor involved in the deal could "do whatever he wants", and it seemed like "he had a lot of power".

She also claimed that he bribed police to get whatever he wanted.

The report also quoted his daughter as saying that the prison where her father was being held as the "worst prison ever".

She said she made the mistake of researching the prison, and that the conditions there made her cry.

It's not the first time a South African has been imprisoned in what is believed to be one of the world’s worst prisons. In 2004, four South Africans were jailed in Black Beach following a foiled coup plot. The four were pardoned and freed in 2009.
