Johannesburg - Four metropolitan municipalities have failed to achieve clean audits from the Auditor General in the past financial year.

According to the Sunday Independent, reports show widespread financial mismanagement and failure to comply with regulations in the year that ended in June 2013.

Chairperson of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Themba Godi, said a lot of money that was wasted should have been used for delivering services, and that municipalities were sites of crude corruption.

He also said municipalities were the worst at managing finances of all levels of government.

The four metropolitan municipalities were Mangaung (Bloemfontein), eThekwini (Durban), Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) and Buffalo City (East London).

Tshwane, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Ekurhuleni all received clean audits.
