Smart ID cards set to prevent fraud

2012-05-18 10:14

Smart ID cards could be in use by the next general election, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said in Pretoria. A national identity system would capture biometric and biographic details of all South Africans and foreign nationals.WATCH

Johannesburg - A Gauteng man has told of the hell he has been through since 2008 when his identity was stolen by fraudsters.

The Star reported Dumisani Gumede's life has become a bureaucratic nightmare.

It began with Gumede being told that personal loans had been taken out at a Nedbank branch with his ID number.

Nedbank eventually cleared him of the fraud.

Blacklisted

But a few months later, when he wanted to buy the house he had been renting, he was told that he had been blacklisted by Nedbank because of identity theft.

Gumede has spent years trying to fix his credit record and get a home loan, but to no avail.

Finally, Nedbank cleared him but this resulted in him having no credit profile and therefore no bank wants to give him a loan.

Gumede said Nedbank told him to get a lawyer to fix the mess he was in.

His ID number is still listed as being fraudulent by the bank.

“I am promised this will be fixed and then everything goes silent and I have to go through the whole process again.”

Credit profile

Gumede said he had been referred to numerous consultants over the years and everyone promised him they would sort out the situation, without results.

“There have been so many broken promises... I have spent R100 000 on lawyers trying to sort this out.”

Nedbank spokesperson Thembi Malabi said Gumede had been given a letter stating that he had an adverse listing because of identity theft and he should produce this correspondence when applying for a loan with other banks.

"Regrettably, the bank is not in a position to lend to Mr Gumede at this stage due to his credit profile,” Malabi said.
